Were you or a loved one diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer after taking Viagra? If so, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries.

Nationwide, Viagra users have reported developing deadly skin cancer after taking the popular erectile dysfunction drug. In fact, one study found that the risk of melanoma increases by 84% in men who take Viagra.

Had the makers of Viagra written a proper warning, many men would have opted against taking the medication. Our Viagra melanoma attorneys are reviewing cases against Pfizer for failing properly to warn the public of potentially lethal side effects.

If you feel you may have claim against Pfizer, the makers of Viagra, complete the web form at the top of the page and let our experienced pharmaceutical attorneys provide you with a free case evaluation.

Background of Viagra

Sometimes known as its generic name sildenafil, Viagra is one of the most popular drugs in history. Viagra was originally developed by chemists at Pfizer for use in hypertension and angina pectoris. That was until the first clinical trials found Viagra had little effect on angina but could treat erectile dysfunction.

The drug was patented in 1996 and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1998. Upon its approval, Viagra became the first oral pill to treat impotence in men.

Backed by a robust marketing campaign, the little blue pill became extremely profitable, raking in billions of dollars each year. In the 2015 Pfizer financial report, Viagra had total revenues of $1.7 billion. At a high point in 2012, Viagra brought in more than $2 billion.

Viagra’s Link to Melanoma

A recent medical study published by JAMA Internal Medicine suggests that men who use Viagra may have a higher risk of developing melanoma. Researchers looked at data from more than 25,000 men who participated in the study and found that men who had used Viagra had nearly twice the risk of developing melanoma.

This finding is important because it may affect the millions of men who have taken the drug since it was first approved in 1998.

Even though the link between Viagra and melanoma is still being investigated, editor of JAMA Internal Medicine June Robinson wrote an editorial in the same issue as the first study suggesting a plausible association between PDE5 inhibitors like Viagra and melanoma.

Common Viagra Side Effects

Viagra, just like Taxotere and Abilify, comes with a list of possible side effects. These are temporary symptoms users may experience when taking the erectile dysfunction drug. Typical side effects include dizziness, stuffy nose, upset stomach, memory problems, and back pain.

The official Viagra prescribing information also lays out several warnings and precautions that include symptoms learned after the fact, such as hearing loss, effects on the eye, and cardiac risk.

Despite growing evidence, Pfizer has yet to notify the public and users about a link between Viagra and skin cancer in its official prescription guide.

Why You Should File a Viagra Melanoma Lawsuit

Information is still trickling in about the relationship between Viagra and potentially lethal skin cancer. But that doesn’t mean you have to wait.

If you developed melanoma after taking Viagra, you may be entitled to compensation. Treatment of skin cancer is not only taxing financially but also emotionally. We may be able to get you financial restitution to cover treatment of melanoma, such as chemotherapy, surgery, biopsies, medication, and more.

Aside from the financial benefits of winning a lawsuit, it’s also important to let drug manufacturers know that they can’t get away with failing to warn the public of potentially life-threatening risks.

Filing a lawsuit holds drug manufacturers accountable for any wrongdoings and brings to light any possible side effects to future users. It’s not just a matter of money, it’s a matter of principle.

Why Pfizer May Be Liable

Despite evidence of a positive link between Viagra and an increased risk of melanoma, Pfizer has done nothing to warn the public of this potentially lethal side effect. In current lawsuits against Pfizer, plaintiffs allege that the pharmaceutical company has failed to research the side effects of the drug and did not update the warnings.

Detecting melanoma in its early stages could mean the difference between life and death. Had men known of the increased risk and watched for common symptoms of melanoma, they may have been able to identify it and be treated before it metastasized.

Pfizer failed the public of its essential duty, and now the company must be held accountable for its actions.

History of Viagra Lawsuits

Lawsuits against Pfizer for melanoma wouldn’t be the first time the pharmaceutical giant went to court over the little blue pill. Men have reported other unexpected symptoms after taking Viagra. Pfizer has already paid millions to settle claims, indicating a widespread issue with the popular erectile dysfunction medication.

These are a few of the previous claims against Viagra:

;

2005

Vision Loss.

Viagra has been linked to cases of blindness and vision loss in dozens of men. The drug can cause Non-Arteritic Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION), which is what happens when the blood flow to the optic nerve is blocked. A study found seven patients had the typical features of NAION within 36 hours of taking Viagra. In 2013 the FDA investigated 38 reports of vision loss related to Viagra.

Yet another study from 2014 found patients with a 1-in-50 genetic mutation called retinitis pigmentosa were also more susceptible to permanent vision loss.

;

2013

Hearing Loss.

Pfizer also went to court after some men suffered sudden hearing loss. The FDA found 29 reports of sudden hearing loss, sometimes accompanied by vertigo and ringing in the ears. The FDA requested a revision to the label for Viagra to include a warning about the risk of sudden hearing loss.

;

2015

Heart Issues.

Some of the first lawsuits against the makers of Viagra involved concerns about the heart. As a result of the sudden drop in blood pressure, Viagra had been linked to possible heart complications like cardiac arrest.

Each of these issues points to a long history of complications and previously unknown issues surrounding Viagra. That’s why it’s no surprise Viagra may have a new side effect: an increased risk of developing skin cancer.

Status of Viagra Melanoma Lawsuits

Viagra melanoma lawsuits are still in the early stages, but men have already begun to file lawsuits against Pfizer. In 2014, Edward Corboy Jr. sued Pfizer for recklessly promoting Viagra as a safe drug when it knew of an increased risk. Corboy took Viagra in 2008 and developed melanoma in 2012.

Here is an excerpt from the complaint: “Despite defendant’s knowledge regarding the risks of Viagra, it did not sufficiently warn doctors who prescribed or patients who were prescribed Viagra of the risk of developing melanoma.”

Corboy, like other men suing Pfizer, is seeking payment for medical bills and punitive damages for negligence.
