What is Pradaxa?
Pradaxa is an oral anticoagulant manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim.
The drug is a blood thinner that prevents the formation of blood clots in at-risk patients. It is also used to lower the risk of stroke caused by blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation.

Background of Pradaxa Lawsuits
Due to their nature, all blood thinners carry a risk of internal bleeding. Yet Pradaxa may carry a higher risk of dangerous internal bleeding than Boehringer Ingelheim originally stated.
As a result, victims of internal bleeding are suing the companies behind Pradaxa for negligence and failure to warn the public of potentially deadly side effects. The first lawsuits against Boehringer Ingelheim were filed in 2014 after patients began suffering from uncontrolled bleeding.
One of the first plaintiffs was Virginia Stuntebeck. She was hospitalized in 2013 for severe gastrointestinal bleeding after taking the drug. Her complaint files in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas argues that the manufacturers and distributors knew or should have known about irreversible bleeding and never properly advised customers about the risks.
Since 2013, thousands of people have come forward to hold these pharmaceutical giants responsible for selling a potentially dangerous drug.

Pradaxa Bleeding Warnings Didn’t Go Far Enough
Plaintiffs contend that while the medication guide did mention the risk of bleeding, the warning did not go far enough. Hundreds of people have died from bleeding while taking Pradaxa. The current Pradaxa prescribing information guide does include a stronger warning and notes that a reversal of anticoagulant effect was not available.
