Have you or a loved one experienced severe side effects after using the IUD Mirena?
Mirena is an intrauterine device that releases a hormone called levonorgestrel. In a nonsurgical procedure that only takes about five minutes, the device is implanted in the uterus by a healthcare professional.
Once implanted, the T-shaped device releases a hormone designed to thin the lining of the uterus and thicken cervical mucus. This helps prohibit the sperm from entering the uterus and fertilizing the egg.
The device can be left implanted for up to five months before a replacement is needed.
Our IUD lawyers are currently accepting claims from those inflicted with unexpected Mirena side effects. Time is running out to file your Mirena lawsuit claim. Fill out the free case evaluation form or call us today!

What is Mirena?
Mirena is the go-to birth control method for millions of women across the United States. The intrauterine device (IUD) is often touted as a safe and effective long-term contraceptive that you can take out whenever you want to get pregnant.
Countless women have successfully used Mirena with few to no side effects. But not all have been so lucky.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received more than 70,000 injury reports about Minera since the device was first approved in 2000, including reports of perforation, issues with pregnancy, infections, and more.
Thousands of women have taken on Bayer over claims that the pharmaceutical company was negligent in protecting consumers and downplayed risks.

Women File Mirena Lawsuits Over Device Migration & Perforation
Mirena maker Bayer has been hit with thousands of lawsuits related to the device since it was first approved. The first lawsuits revolved around complaints of unexpected device migration and perforation.
When Mirena is properly placed, it should stay in place for up to five years. There is a risk of the device coming dislodged, which can be dangerous. Not only can the device attach to a location it does not belong but it can also perforate or pierce organs.
In a news story covered by ABC News 6 in Cleveland, one woman reported that her IUD had become dislodged three years after implantation. It gave her severe pain, so she had to go to an emergency room.
“They did an X-ray and saw that the IUD has completely perforated through my uterine wall and was just floating around in my abdomen,” she told the news outlet.
Her story was similar to thousands of others who claim that Bayer knew or should have known about the risks Mirena posed to women.

Mirena Side Effects & Complications
Despite all the benefits and countless stories of satisfaction with the device, side effects and complications do occur. In fact, the FDA has received tens of thousands of complaints submitted to its adverse events reporting system. Side effects range from mild to severe.
Common Side Effects:
- Placement complications
- Expulsion
- Irregular bleeding
- Weight gain
- Abdominal and pelvic pain
- Acne
- Unwanted hair growth
- Mood changes
- Cramps
- Headaches
- Low sex drive
- Ovarian cysts
- Bleeding between menstrual cycles
- Dizziness
- Inflammation of the vulva or vagina
- Breast tenderness
While the majority of side effects are mild, many complaints submitted to the FDA involve serious complications. According to an FDA spokesperson who responded to ABC News 5, more than 4,700 women reported Mirena device dislocation between 2008 and 2013.
That’s not the only side effect that’s been reported to the FDA or seen in postmarketing analyses. More severe side effects have also occurred.
Serious Side Effects:
- Ovarian cysts
- Device migration
- Organ perforation
- Pseudotumor cerebri
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Miscarriages
- Breast cancer
Hundreds of Mirena Lawsuits Still Pending
Bayer still faces lawsuits over its Mirena IUD, however. Women have been filing lawsuits over claims that the device caused a condition called idiopathic intracranial hypertension or pseudotumor cerebri (PTC).
Studies have linked higher levels of the hormone levonorgestrel with PTC. In one lawsuit, plaintiff Katrina Everett-Carey claimed that she was implanted with Mirena in 2010 without complication. A little over a year later, she went to the hospital for PTC, which she says was caused by Mirena. She now suffers from permanent injuries, including damage to her optic nerve.
She is suing Bayer for negligence, breach of implied warranty, failure to warn, strict liability, designing a defective product, and more.
In 2017, all federal cases related to PTC claims were consolidated into multidistrict litigation where 480 cases were pending as of April 2018.
Lawyers expect more victims of Mirena to come forward to file lawsuits in the coming months. Those who think they may have a case should contact a qualified attorney immediately.
Bayer and Plaintiffs Reach Potential Mirena Settlement
By 2013, thousands of lawsuits were filed in federal and state courts around the country related to migration and perforation claims. About 1,800 cases were consolidated in federal court that year with another roughly thousand cases consolidated in New Jersey state court.
Bayer argued for dismissal of the federal lawsuits after plaintiffs could not find expert testimony to back up their perforation claims. In 2016, the 1,200 lawsuits were dismissed by the judge. Plaintiffs tried to appeal the decision, but the appeals court affirmed the dismissal in October 2017.
A settlement that would cover state and federal cases involving perforation claims was in its early stages in August 2017.
